FAQ - Answers

Q1: I have learning challenges, but I don't fit into either of the classic patterns of VSLD or LLD. What do I do now?

A: If you think that you have learning challenges that were not identified on the Learning page, there are a few options. Have a look at the questions below and see which is true for you. If you fit into more than one of the categories, you may need some individual professional help in sorting it all out (Let's Chat!).

Here are a few other questions that may help to clarify the situation:

Are you much better in one area of functioning than another? Yes or No?

If NO, it may be that you have challenges in all areas of learning. There can be many reasons for this (see FAQ #4 on the Learning Page). If this has all been ruled out by your family doctor, it may be that you have a General Learning Disability or Developmental Delay. In this case, it will be important for you to be placed in the most appropriate educational setting. If you are an adult, career counselling may help you find the best place for you to use your unique set of skills. Go now to the Step Three - Personality Page.

If YES, check out the Chart on Learning Discrepancies: Common Areas, Strategies and Interventions. If there are one or more areas that apply, choose one area to address first and see how things go.

If one of your areas of concern is reading, or if you read well but get tired after 15 minutes or lose your place when you read, see the Chart on Common Causes of Reading Problems, Symptoms and Remedial Strategies.

To find out more about Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (SSS) - one possible cause of reading difficulties (and the second cause in the Chart on difficulties in the Decoding of words… see See it Right! or The Irlen Institute. If you would like to know how to test yourself with overlays (see FAQ on Coloured Overlays).
